Promissory note, 1804.

A promissory note for 15,750 francs, drawn in New York, Sept. 5, 1804, and signed by Jérôme Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon I. The note is endorsed in the handwriting of Victor du Pont, "Payez a l'ordre de Messrs Gros Davillier & Cie. de paris valuer en compte New York 10 septembre 1804 - V. du Pont de Nemours & Coy. The endorsement is cancelled as invalid. Victor lost considerable sums in bankrolling Jérôme Bonaparte, who did not repay his loans, contributing to Victor's bankruptcy in 1805.

Victor du Pont (1767-1827) was born in Paris, the eldest son of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. After completing his education, he was employed as one of three sous-chiefs in his father's office at the Bureau du Commerce in Paris. In 1787 he obtained a position as private secretary to the Comte de Moustier, the French minister to the United States.
